Laminate flooring is on lower side of costing for maintenance but provides the look of hardwood or stone flooring. It is made from high-density fiber or wood particles that are designed to look like wood or stone. There are many manufacturers like Pergo, Dupont, Mannington, Armstrong. You can say Laminate flooring is a hybrid. It has the looks of hardwood but it’s not. Neither its vinyl tiling and nor engineered flooring. But it is a mixture of all those. It is durable as it has clear, hard layer on top. You can select from glue down laminate flooring or snap on interlocking plank system. The “snap-together” type is easier to install but not as structurally sound as the “glue-together” type. And the reason to select “glue-together” type is that it resists moisture better. Laminate flooring can be placed on top of any existing flooring. Many people are using laminate flooring as they are durable like many manufacturer offers at least 10 years warranty. Unlike wood, which can dent, laminate flooring is almost impervious to dents and scratches. Laminate flooring has what’s called in the industry a “wear layer” that protects the photographic layer underneath. Other reasons to use laminate flooring are that it is less costly, easy to install than hardwood flooring, scratch resistant, easy to clean. You can just use a dust mop or mop dampened with water to clean it up. No floor waxing is needed. It also resists Stains and if you do get a stain, it’s easy to clean off. The way real hardwood, which may have many imperfect pieces that need to be thrown out or re-engineered, there are no defects in laminate flooring. Laminate flooring gives wood look for less and it is also environment friendly as it uses less wood in construction. It has its own disadvantage as well like laminate flooring does not absorb sound well and can have a hollow sound when you walk on it, particularly in high heels. This can be reduced up to some extent by using an acoustic underlay. There is less design options for laminate flooring as the look of the flooring is set by the manufacturer. And laminate also lacks the visual warmth like hardwood. The materials in laminate flooring are moisture resistant, but the floors can warp in high-moisture areas. Though you can install kitchens and bathrooms or other rooms that are exposed topical moisture, you cannot use them where there is heavy water or steam. The biggest disadvantage is that if it is heavily worn, deep scratched, or grooved, it cannot be sanded or refinished like solid hardwood: it must be replaced. It really feels hard under foot. Foam underlayment helps dampen this feeling, but it’s still there. It also has slippery feeling, low resale value as compared to good hardwood or engineered wood gives better value when selling your house.

Since the introduction of laminate flooring into the US in 1982, the sector has experienced growth of up to 20% per annum at the expense of other floor types, making laminate the fastest growing floor type in the country. The appeal lies not only in its aesthetic value of its representation of real hardwood, but also due to its incredible durability and ease of maintenance.

The following factors will help you evaluate different brands and styles of laminate flooring in order to determine which laminate floor best suites your application.

Laminate floors are constructed using two different methods of manufacture: Direct Pressure Laminate (DPL) and High Pressure Laminate (HPL). Direct pressure laminate is made up of three layers, while a High Pressure Laminate is made up of a minimum of five layers. Is one better than the other? Yes. HPL is a far superior product. The addition of Phenolic Treated Kraft Sheets make the HPL a far stronger, more dent resistant and stable product. The catch is that they come with a higher price tag. Do you need HPL in your home? No. Most laminate floors sold in the US are (DPL) and are built for today’s active households. However if you are looking for a floor that will withstand the vigour of small children and large pets and still look good in 15 years time, then High Pressure Laminate is a good alternative.

Laminate cores range in thickness from 6mm to 12mm, with a thicker core usually denoting a more stable product. The only exception to this rule is High Pressure Laminate (HPL), which although has a much thinner core compared to (DPL), is stronger and more durable. Composition of core material is also an important factor. A good laminate floor is constructed using High density Fiberboard (HDF) as the core material, which has been treated with water repellent chemicals, offering stability and a high level of water resistance.

Joint integrity can be an important factor, especially when placing heavy items on your laminate floors. Laminate floors are engineered to withstand normal day to day wear and tear and are designed to withstand the weight of normal household furniture. If you wish to place an extra heavy item of furniture on you floors, such as a very large fish tank, you might want to consider purchasing a floor that has an aluminum locking system. Laminate floor joints should also be treated with water repellent chemicals, such as paraffin wax, which is impregnated into the tongue and groove of the floor boards.

A good laminate warranty should cover the following aspects: Fading, Denting, Wear and Tear, Staining and should have some kind of water warranty, although keep in mind that no laminate warranty covers flooding. Always be sure to scrutinize the duration of the different aspects of a laminate warranty, as a 25 year warranty might refer to manufacturers defects only, while the wear and tear aspect of the warranty only covers a 15 year period.

North American Laminate Flooring Association (NALFA): NALFA is the organization that sets the standards for laminate flooring in the USA. NALFA is a non profit organization, and its members are unpaid volunteers. Laminates submitted o NALFA undergo a range of stringent tests. If the laminate floor meets or exceeds NALFA standards, it will earn the right to display the NALFA seal of approval. Note that submission of laminate flooring to NALFA is voluntary. The following laminates carry the NALFA seal of approval: Pergo, Mannington, Wilsonart. A more complete list can be found at the NALFA website.

I am sure everyone is familiar with what a jigsaw puzzle is and what it looks like. A jigsaw puzzle is a collection of pieces, usually made of cardboard, that are to be connected with one another in such a way that would solve the picture puzzle. You might have noticed that puzzle pieces do not have sticky sides, nor does the one trying to solve the puzzle make use of glue or such a material to be able to fasten two pieces together. The puzzle pieces just simply connect. Also, wherever you solve the jigsaw puzzle, say, on a tabletop, the pieces would not stick to it nor would it to any other surface. Today, some laminate flooring manufacturers have managed to produce the best and latest kind yet—think of it as a giant jigsaw puzzle. The only difference aside from the size and shape of the “puzzle pieces” is that the picture you would have by the time you correctly arrange the pieces is not that of a cartoon character, a peaceful scenery, or such. Rather, you would have the look of classic hardwood, marble or slate. For the rest, they are the same. These laminate flooring tiles also do not require glue, nails, or any adhesive material to be able to connect with one another. And like the jigsaw puzzle pieces, they also do not stick to the surface where they have been installed, making it very easy to remove when you want to replace it. Mannington laminate flooring is one of these giant jigsaw puzzles popular today.

Mannington laminates are created using a technique called Thermo Composite Construction, which makes use of tremendous heat and pressure to fuse five layers of a plank together in a single step, creating an exceptionally durable floor. The top layer is made of melamine resin, permeated with aluminum oxide. This is a material whose degree of hardness is exceeded only by that of diamonds. These laminates also have surface embossing, which gives it an impressive and realistic look of hardwood or stone.

Mannington laminate flooring is scratch-resistant, ideal for homes with children and pets and other high-traffic areas. It is also water-resistant, making it best for bathrooms and kitchens. No need to worry about water dripping when coming out of the shower. Compared to real wood or stone, it is a lot cheaper, which appeals much to homeowners. It is also less dent-resistant. It is extremely low maintenance as well; simple sweeping or vacuuming is enough to keep the floor clean. For water spills, wiping the wet surface immediately with a damp cloth does the job. As long as the water did not sit for a prolonged period of time, the risks for planks to warp are very low. High heels, chairs, muddy shoes, and such will not harm your floor. Unlike natural wood, laminate floors do not require oiling or waxing. And reiterating what I have mentioned earlier, the installation of these tiles is extremely easy. Like a jigsaw puzzle, arranging the tile pieces could be difficult at first but once you get the hang of it, you will start to get quicker and enjoy the process more. And once the picture is revealed, the satisfaction you will have is not like any other.
