Installing laminate flooring is something that you can easily do yourself. Why pay professionals to do it when the instructions for how to install it are printed right on the package. In addition, all the manufacturers of laminate flooring have the directions for installing the flooring available on their websites. There are some differences in how to install laminate floors and installing hardwood floors, but you can use the same tools for both. The first step in installing laminate flooring is to calculate the size of the room and purchase the flooring of your choice.

When installing hardwood flooring, you have to leave the hardwood open for a time so that it can become acclimatized to your home. This is not the case when installing laminate flooring. When reading the directions as to how to install laminate flooring, you will learn that you have to install it as soon as you open the package. You also have to check all the planks before you install them to ensure that none of them are defective. You will get a refund for any defective planks, but not if you have already installed them. If you have difficulty getting the laminate planks to fit together, you should not put them together and take them apart more than three times. This could damage the laminate flooring and mar the effect when you have it completed.

If you are installing laminate flooring in your kitchen, you should have the cabinets in place beforehand. This is not the case when installing hardwood flooring, but you have to remember that the hardwood is solid wood, whereas laminate flooring is made from engineered wood. It does not have the same level of hardness. This means that you will have to learn how to install laminate flooring around the cabinets. This is also why you need to have a saw to cut the planks when you need smaller sizes and pieces to fit around the cabinets.

When installing laminate flooring in the laundry room, you should make sure that you have rubber pads underneath the washer and dryer. This is to make sure that these appliances are level so that they won’t damage your flooring. Although most people do not have laminate flooring in the laundry room, there is no reason why you can’t use this room of the house to learn how to install laminate flooring. You can even practice installing hardwood flooring on this small area before you tackle more visible rooms of the house.

You might be in need of a few tips for installing laminate flooring if you are just learning how to install laminate flooring. If you have to place the laminate flooring around pipes, one tip is to drill a hole in the plank about ¾ to ½ inch larger than the circumference of the pipe. Then cut the plank through the center of the hole and fit the two pieces of laminate flooring together around the pipe and glue them together. When installing laminate flooring, the flooring should extend under the doorframe. If you use a piece of scrap that you have left over, you can use this as a marker for the depth that you need to trim the doorframe.

A laminate flooring installation should fit extremely well into a busy household, where cleaning chores need to be simplified as much as possible. Provided that you follow the installation and maintenance instructions carefully, a laminate hardwood floor is likely to save you time, while adding elegance and style to your decor. Here are the answers to ten of the most frequently asked laminate flooring installation questions.

1. What Is Laminate Flooring And Can I Install It Myself?

If you have an affinity for real hardwood floors, but can’t afford them and prefer not to have the maintenance misery associated with them, you will love laminate flooring. The quality of these floors are now such that it is difficult to distinguish between real wood and laminates. The grains of the different woods are emulated to perfection, with texture and weathering thrown in as a bonus.

Laminate flooring planks consist of four or five fused layers. The base layer is normally reinforced with melamine. This is followed with the core of high density fiberboard, impregnated with sealing substances. Then there is the design layer, followed by the tough wear layer and an aluminum oxide finish. The planks are resistant to stains, fading, scuffing and water.

Innovative engineering has led to the development of glueless laminate flooring installations, popular among do it yourself enthusiasts. The planks have a tongue and groove design that simply click or snap together for an amazingly simple and quick installation. Although professional flooring contractors can be involved, this isn’t necessary. Even a novice can tackle this home remodeling task with confidence.

2. What Is An Expansion Space?

A laminate flooring installation is a floating floor that is not affixed to the sub-floor. These hardwood floors always contract and expand due to humidity and temperature changes. To make provision for these shifts, laminate floors are never installed with the planks fitting snugly against walls or cabinets. It is vital to leave a space right around the perimeter. If you neglect to do this, you will soon be confronted with a buckling floor.

Every manufacturer prescribes the exact expansion space needed for their particular product. You will be able to use spacers to ensure that this provision is accurate. The size of the floor you are tackling in your home improvement project, will also dictate the size of the expansion space. Make sure that you get this right if you want to retain the looks of your flooring.

3. Will I Be Able To Install Laminate Flooring In A Bathroom?

Many laminate flooring products are suitable for use in bathrooms and kitchens, where there is always more of a moisture risk. Check with your supplier if you are unsure. The most important factor here is your diligence during the installation process. Every expansion space needs to be sealed perfectly with your caulking gun, to ensure that moisture can’t seep into the core of the flooring. Once this happens, you will have problems with buckling, warping and blistering.

In the case of bathroom and kitchen flooring, the recommendation usually also is to use glue in the joints. This will act as an additional sealant, helping to protect your flooring.

4. How Do I Finish The Areas Around Doorways?

All the manufacturers supply ranges of color-coordinated decorative moldings for use in doorways, for transitions between different flooring finishes, and around cabinets, basins or tubs. These make it straightforward to ensure that your flooring has a professional finish. In a doorway, you will install a T-molding.

5. Is It Safe To Install Laminate Flooring On Stairs?

A laminate flooring installation can be done on stairs. In this case however, you don’t need an underlayment. The flooring planks are adhered to the subfloor with glue. As a finish, stair noses are glued and nailed to the stairs. Just be very careful if you have been cleaning the flooring. Any dampness may cause the stairs to be extremely slippery.

6. What Is The AC Rating?

One of the most important aspects of a laminate hardwood floor installation, is matching the flooring to the traffic it will be bombarded with. Using a low quality, thin floor in a high traffic area will be disastrous. The AC Rating has been devised to help consumers when they have to make a buying decision.

The AC Rating of between 1 and 5 gives an indication of the suitability of the flooring planks for a particular area. In most residential situations, an AC Rating of 3 is high enough to ensure durability. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that a higher rating will give your flooring a longer life. While this may be the case, a higher rating also comes with a rougher surface texture that can be tough on bare feet and socks.

7. I Love A Tiled Look. Is There A Laminate Flooring Option For Me?

A fairly recent development in the laminate flooring installation industry, is the introduction of planks with an extremely authentic ceramic or stone tile appearance, complete with realistic grout lines. Just imagine getting the tiled look you adore, without any of the grout messes. No more cracking, moldy, discolored grout to spoil your hard work. Just a smooth, multi-hued tiled look clicked together within a day. This truly is a decorating and interior design dream come true.

8. Doesn’t Laminate Flooring Have A Plastic Look?

With the latest engineering, the days of plastic, fake-looking laminates are over. You will be amazed at the authenticity of the real wood or stone tile designs. Textures can be refined to be completely realistic. Planks are now beveled to come even closer to the real thing. In addition, weathering has been brought in to give that unique warm and rustic real hardwood appearance.

9. Do I Need To Acclimate My Laminate Flooring Planks?

Some manufacturers stipulate that the unopened boxes of flooring planks should be stored horizontally in the room where they will be installed, for a period of around 48 hours. This gives the planks a chance to acclimate. Your supplier should be able to give you the correct instructions. Alternatively, you can go to the manufacturer’s website for more information. Make sure that you allow for this period when you do your planning. Don’t rush into the installation. Follow the instructions to the letter if you don’t want to void your warranty.

10. What Do I Do If There Is A Nasty Scratch On My Floor?

One of the main benefits of a laminate flooring installation, is that you can repair minor mishaps with ease, and replace a whole section of flooring in the event of a serious calamity. It is always better to try and prevent scratches by using felt pads under furniture, keeping pet nails trimmed, and avoiding spiked shoes. Entrance rugs are also a good idea, as they catch some of the gravel and grit before it gets onto the flooring. If there are scratches, color-coordinated pens are available to make them less conspicuous.

For more noticeable scratches, a filling putty can be used. Neaten the edges of the area with a small, sharp knife. Fill it with putty, and smooth the surface gently with a plastic scraper. Wipe excess away with a damp cloth and your floor should be as good as new.

Follow the laminate flooring installation guidelines to the letter, give your flooring the tender loving care it deserves, and you will enjoy its good looks for years to come.

Laminate flooring installations have transformed do it yourself novices into property plastic surgery pro’s, confidently adding value to homes all over the world. Home remodeling rookies are clamoring to get their itching hands on boxes of hardwood laminate flooring planks, knowing that the innovation behind this interior design idea will ensure a gratifying, fast-paced, glueless and groutless experience.

Click-together laminate hardwood flooring and tiling are the home improvement industry areas with the fastest growth rates. First-timers tackling a laminate flooring installation have loads of questions. The major manufacturers of flooring ranges such as Pergo Flooring, Armstrong Flooring, Mohawk Flooring, Bruce Flooring and similar products go out of their way to answer these in detail. What inspires many a home renovating junkie is that an average-sized floor can be ready to use and admire within a day – begging for compliments from somewhat green-around-the-gills neighbors…

The days of frustrating, messy, sticky, glued flooring planks are fading into the distance, as companies compete to come up with the most convenient and easiest to install flooring options. The simple click-’n-go designs of glueless laminate flooring ranges ensure a perfect finish plank after plank. You will have to go a long way to find an interior design idea that can be implemented faster, with more spectacular results! Now, let’s get to the million dollar questions.

Am I Able To Do A Laminate Flooring Installation Over Existing Floors?

Absolutely. Quality laminate flooring is manufactured to be laid directly over almost any existing floor, from ceramic to vinyl, tile, or real wood. There is no need to waste time or resources ripping out an old floor. Two exceptions are real wood on concrete floors and carpeting – these need to be taken out before the installation. What is vitally important, however, is to ensure that the sub-floor is perfectly smooth and even before you begin to saw and click. Carefully sand down all bumpy areas or peaked joints. Fill up any irregular spots. If possible, install cabinets or cupboards before you give the laminate flooring installation project a go.

Do I Need To Leave A Gap Between My Laminate Flooring Installation And The Wall?

Glueless Laminate Flooring is designed to be a floating floor product, meaning that it isn’t permanently fixed to the sub-floor area. These flooring ranges constantly react to changes in humidity and temperatures by contracting and expanding. It is therefore vital to leave at least a 1/4″ expansion space between the flooring planks and all adjacent walls or cupboards. Getting this right will prevent unsightly buckling floors down the line. Don’t worry about the gaps being an eye-sore. The Laminate Flooring industry manufactures a wide range of decorative moldings you can use to hide these spaces after installation. These are color coordinated to match the flooring and virtually guarantee a professional finish. Use the recommended spacers to keep your distances even – never trust your eye. A wider expansion space will be recommended if you are tackling a very large floor area.

Can I Do Anything About The Hollow Sound Of Footsteps On Laminate Flooring?

The echoing sounds that often follow your footsteps is the result of the floating floor concept. This is why a quality underlayment is so important. Rather pay a few dollars extra to get an effective sound dampening padding. Another advantage is that a thicker underlayment gives a more comfortable feel underfoot, especially where you will be standing for long periods, such as in the kitchen. Pergo’s SilentStep foam or Soundbloc foam, and Mohawk Silentgard are excellent options. Many manufacturers now pre-attach the underlayment to the flooring planks. This is a time-saving and convenient measure. Just remember that you will probably need to remove this layer if you want to do a laminate flooring installation on stairs. The thickness of the flooring you install is another factor that plays a role in sound dampening.

You will also need a vapor barrier, usually a resin polyethylene film. Examples of this are the Pergo Moisturbloc vapor barrier and Mohawk Moisturegard. This layer protects your flooring from swelling and buckling due to moisture. If the sub-floor is wood, this barrier film isn’t used.

Do I Need To Acclimate Laminate Flooring Before The Installation?

Some manufacturers recommend that you acclimate your laminate flooring planks by storing the unopened cartons on their flat side in the room where the flooring will be installed. This period should usually last between 49 and 96 hours, so take this into account while you do your planning. Don’t ignore this instruction – you don’t want an ugly, buckling flooring fiasco! Displaying that bit of patience can mean the difference between gaping joints and neatly clicked together flooring for years to come.

Is It Safe To Do A Laminate Flooring Installation In A Bathroom Or Kitchen?

The surface of a quality laminate flooring product is usually highly water resistant, so the planks perform beautifully in high humidity areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. To prevent buckling and warping in these areas, the expansion spaces need to be sealed with a product such as Pergo Sealant or a similar mildew-resistant silicone sealant before installing the trim or molding. The same should be done where the planks were cut to make room for cupboards or a dishwasher. It may also be wise to seal the joints by using glue. Your supplier will be able to advise you about the most satisfactory installation process. Keep in mind that, in spite of its water resistance, a laminate flooring installation and standing water will never be friends. If there is a spill, wipe it dry immediately.

Is It Safe To Do A Laminate Flooring Installation On Stairs?

Provided that you follow installation instructions to the letter, laminate flooring may usually be extended to the stairs. Steps are professionally finished with a Stair Nosing. The nosing is adhered with a quality construction adhesive and finishing screws. Although this flooring product has been designed to be a floating range, it must be glued to stairs. This is the only circumstance where adhesive is used to fix the flooring to the sub-floor.

How Do I Ensure A Professional Finish When Installing Laminate Flooring?

The brilliant guys in the laminate flooring industry have come up with a huge selection of color-coordinated transition moldings. You can finish your do it yourself home remodeling project in style and with an elegant touch. Trim doorways with T-Moldings, while end moldings are used along sliding doors and around tubs and basins. If you need to go from a raised laminate flooring area to a lower hard surface such as vinyl, choose a hard surface reducer.

Oops! My Laminate Flooring Installation Has A Puncture! What Now?

Don’t despair! The folks at laminate flooring companies realize that mishaps are inevitable in active households where kids and pets rule. They therefore produce magical products such as Pergo Finishing Putty. Simply neaten the edges of the chipped area with a small knife, make sure the area is clean, and fill the hole with putty. Use a spatula to give the repair job a neat finish. Wipe away the excess, and you’re done. Plank replacements are also possible if a more major repair is needed. Always put away a few spare planks for this purpose, as the range may be out of stock when you need it most.

A laminate flooring installation is likely to transform a beloved family home into a wrinkle-less, stylish and sprightly young lady. Isn’t it about time to let those tattered carpets go?

Laminate flooring installations are creating a buzz among home remodeling rookies. This flooring phenomenon is building a do it yourself following that is unheard of in the industry. Overnight a tattered, carpeted home can be transformed into an elegant mansion with gleaming, stylish floors brandishing every real wood grain imaginable. If a homeowner qualifies for a home improvement loan or home equity loan, this is one sure way of spending it sensibly while adding impressive value to the property. What exactly is a laminate flooring installation and why the home improvement hype?

A laminate flooring installation is a flooring project done with tongue and groove planks that click together to form a stable, floating floor. No adhesive or nails are used to fix the planks to the sub-floor. The planks can have the appearance and texture of real wood, ceramic tiles or stone tiles and the latest technology is such that the look created is extremely authentic.

You won’t necessarily need to rip out existing floors if you plan a laminate flooring installation. Laminate planks will be quite at home if installed over vinyl, tiles, or real wood. Just make sure that the sub-floor is perfectly smooth and even and follow the manufacturer’s detailed guidance in every respect. Carpeting and real wood on concrete floors will have to be taken out before installing laminate flooring.

The planks used during a laminate flooring installation usually consist of four fused layers. The bottom layer is mostly reinforced with melamine. This substance provides stability and protects the upper layers from moisture. The most important layer is the inner core made of a medium density fiberboard, treated and impregnated with edge sealing substances. The third layer is the decorative part of the plank. This is nothing more than a photograph that gives the flooring plank the authentic wood or tile looks. Covering the decorative layer is the wear layer, usually consisting of cellulose paper, combined with melamine plastic resins and an aluminum oxide coating. The best wear layers resist staining, moisture, scratching, fading and other signs of wear, protecting the laminate flooring installation for years to come.

In the case of Alloc Flooring, an additional thick Kraft paper layer has been added between the design layer and the core. The Alloc Laminate Flooring core consists of a unique Aqua Resist fiber board which has been engineered to minimize the risk of fluid absorption. Alloc floors are in the company of other classy manufacturers such as Pergo Flooring, Quick Step Flooring, Wilsonart Flooring, and Trafficmaster Allure Flooring.

The budget sections of laminate flooring installation ranges are often manufactured with a direct pressure method. The four layers are assembled, heated and pressed to form the fused flooring plank. The pressure exerted is around 300 pounds per square inch at 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

More expensive laminate flooring installations consist of high pressure planks. The top and bottom layers of the planks are treated separately and Phenol impregnated Kraft paper is added. This is all fused to the core layer. Extreme pressure of around 1300 pounds per square inch is used at 300 degrees Fahrenheit. This ensures a more stable, durable end product with less chipping and a higher degree of moisture resistance.

As a laminated flooring installation isn’t affixed to the sub-floor, you need a good quality padded underlayment to dampen sound, add to the stability of the floor, give warmth and add a more comfortable feel underfoot. Some manufacturers pre-attach this underlayment to the planks. While this is a convenient option, some experts view attached padding as slightly less effective than a separate underlayment. The underlayment usually consists of cork, felt or foam.

In the case of an Alloc Laminate Flooring installation, the underlayment is pre-affixed to the planks. This Alloc Silent System padding claims to dampen sound to a higher degree than other comparable padding products. The Alloc Flooring system can even be ordered to include under-floor heating that is incorporated into the underlayment.

In addition to the underlayment, a plastic moisture or vapor barrier is placed between the planks and the underlayment to give additional protection against moisture. Any contact with fluids may cause the core to swell, leading to buckling or blistering of the floor. This level is usually a polyethylene material. It isn’t used in a laminate flooring installation where the sub-floor is real wood.

What makes a laminate flooring installation so popular, is the fact that it is an easy, glueless operation that can be attempted by any do it yourself novice. This is a home remodeling option that gives highly gratifying results within a few hours and can be used immediately in most cases. The tongue and groove designs of the laminate flooring installation planks simply snap or click together, creating tight-fitting, almost invisible joints.

If done correctly using a high grade product, these installations will retain their immaculate appearance for many years. Most ranges are warranted for between 15 and 30 years, giving an indication of the robustness of a laminate flooring installation. It can be used in virtual any interior space, and even does well in bathrooms and kitchens, as long as the laminate flooring installation instructions are followed carefully.

To recap, here are the 10 main benefits of a laminate flooring installation:

1. A laminate flooring installation is a low-maintenance flooring solution.

2. A wise decor choice will give you long-lasting quality.

3. A laminate floor is stain resistant.

4. Laminate flooring installations are usually fade resistant to a large degree.

5. Laminate floors can be installed over most existing floors.

6. This type of flooring can be installed on all grade levels.

7. A top-rated laminate flooring installation will offer superb impact resistance.

8. Laminate floors mimic the warmth and texture of real hardwood accurately at a fraction of the cost.

9. The new, glueless laminate flooring click together designs are a terrific home improvement project for a do it yourself novice.

10. These floors can be lifted and replaced easily, partly or room-wise. This is of particular importance in case of a serious mishap. This is also why you always need to store a few planks.

Virtually every wood grain and texture is catered for in laminate flooring collections. By extending the ranges to include ceramic tile and stone tile options, there is no end to interior design ideas in the flooring realm. Any decor style and architecture can get a speedy face-lift with a laminate flooring installation.

1. The inspection should be done after 2 days since the installation is finished as this is the first time for each floor plank to work with others. They need time to work well to with others well. Also laminate flooring is a floating type. The floor planks need time to expand.

The ambiance and beauty of homes will depend a lot on the type of design and materials to be used. That is why the need to properly find expert flooring contractors to fabricate and ensure a more than satisfactory finish is a must for people who value class and quality in their homes.

- Scouting the Area for Flooring Contractors

Typically, flooring contractors are available everywhere. Regardless of the type of flooring, their completed jobs will speak highly of their qualifications and all. Flooring contractors are usually overlooked since the common understanding of most is that the floor designs are included in the whole architectural design of the place.

Laminate flooring is the best type of material that is advisable and feasible to most. Other than being easy to install and lesser problems in the event of messy problems such as stains and scratches, laminate flooring is the best resort to lean towards to.

- Laminate Flooring Installation

Laminate or Pergo Flooring provides a classy appeal to the eye of the people who would reside in the place of installation. While some would consider other forms of flooring enhancements, it is the best type of flooring to adhere to, given its advantages and cost.

The fact that floor contractors will have an advantage on the architectural experts will also be an essential part of portraying the ideal finish. In most cases, a good complement and common vision as far as the visualization of the area or place of concern would help a lot in creating the ideal finish that most people would want for their place.

So perhaps what people would say is, why laminate flooring? As stated above, it is plain and simple to install but classy and appealing to the eye of the normal person. It adds the needed touch to liven up any home.

In a sense, people fail to see the benefits of having to consider floor installation to enhance ambiance and home design quality. Most people would focus on wallpapers, outside appearance, furniture placements and so on. However, overlooking the common area that people would walk on may be something that is indeed missing. In such cases, perhaps laminate wood flooring is all that would take to liven up any place that people reside in. Whether it is overlooked or not would depend on how homeowners would view their homes, styles of which differ from that of other unique conceptualizations.

When the time comes to install your laminate flooring, there are a number of different tools that you will need to have acquired in order to complete the task successfully. All laminate flooring tools are designed so that they make the installation process that much easier.

In this article we will take a look at various different tools that you will need to help install an adhesive laminate floor. But the thing you must always remember when it comes to installing laminate flooring is that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions to the letter as well as use the tools that they recommend.

1. Tapping Block

This is used in order to lightly tap the two planks of laminate together and most of those available today will be designed to specifically fit in to a particular manufacturer’s tongue and groove design. So it is important that when you buy your laminate flooring you also buy the right tapping block at the same time.

2. Pulling Bar

Whereas a tapping block is used to tap two planks of laminate flooring together, a person uses a pulling bar to pull them towards each other. However when using this particular tool you need to be careful to ensure that they do not scratch or chip the surface of the laminate flooring as you pull them towards each other.

3. Wedges or Spacers

These are used to help ensure that the minimum amount of space is left between the edge of the laminate flooring and the walls in your home. It is important that you look at the manufacturer’s instructions as these will provide you with the exact spacing you need.

4. Glue (Adhesive)

In order for some laminate flooring planks to secure against each other properly a special glue (adhesive) will need to be used. Not only does it secure the planks together, but it also helps to prevent moisture from penetrating into the core of each plank.

5. Fillers and Sealants

There are some laminate flooring manufacturers who provide fillers and sealants which will co-ordinate with the laminate flooring you have purchased. The fillers are used to help seam gaps between each of the planks while the sealant is used around the edges of the room in order to prevent moisture gaining entry into the planks also.

There are many other laminate flooring tools that you may well need but in this particular article we have taken a look at what are considered to be the basic ones that any one will need should they decide to install laminate flooring themselves.
